United CEO Scott Kirby has pitched a potential merger with American Airlines in a meeting with President Trump in late February according to sources. American Airlines and United are the two largest airlines by capacity according to OAG data. Kirby made the case that a merged United-American would be more competitive on international routes where foreign carriers count for 60% of traffic currently.
